Why Come Here? Cheap eats, interesting Japanese inspired tacos and nachos
Like an American Idol for food, Smorgasburg has been a launching pad for many successful restaurant concepts in recent years. And from this years lot, one place I expect to see a lot more of is Takumi Taco. While the combination of Japanese and Mexican may sound at first like mixing ice cream and ketchup, these guys have it down to a delicious science. Think Beef Curry Nachos, Spicy Tuna Tacos and Yuzu Avocado Guacamole. Currently you can find them at both Smorgasburg in Williamsburg and Starrett Lehigh in Chelsea. Below is what I’ve tried:
Short Rib Nachos Short rib is often either too fatty or too dry, but the preparation here was perfect. Plus they get bonus points for doing it in a mobile location. The thin, crispy chips and wasabi crema topping make for a great order of nachos.
Spicy Tuna Tacos What’s not to love about big hunks of tuna in spicy mayo and avocado? Nothing. The crispy gyoza taco shell makes it a little more Japanese and is perfect wrapper.
Short Rib Tacos Same delicious short ribs as the nachos in smaller corn tortilla form.
Japanese Curry Beef Tacos Perhaps the most Mexican of the dishes with the apanese curried beef and goyza shell being topped with onion, cilantro and cotija cheese. If you want something more traditional but still interesting, this is a solid option.
