Why Come Here? Excellent authentic tacos, backyard dining
Taqueria Cocoyoc is one of the few waiter service taquerias you’ll find in this taco-rich region of Bushwick. It’s perfect for taking a break on a taco crawl (as I did) or hanging out for a full Mexican meal. And hey, there’s plenty to talk about at a long meal beginning with the unusual decor including such items as ceramic magic mushrooms and a Virgin Mary surrounded by flashing Christmas lights. Or you can just sit in their spacious and notice how quite it is compared to Manhattan. Another plus: they’re also one of the few taquerias serving booze. But take note: DO NOT be tempted by the $16 bottle of sangria. It tastes like fruit punch that has gone bad. Stick to the beers to wash down your tacos and you’ll be happy.
Cocoyoc’s massive Mexican menu also makes this a suitable destination it its own right. In addition to tacos, everything from tortas to nachos to chilaquiles come with nearly every topping imaginable. But I’m a taco guy who came on a taco crawl, so I can’t speak to any of those. When it comes to topping your taco you have two options – Mexican Style or Con Todo (with everything). The Mexican simply includes your standard onions, cilantro and lime wedge. Con todo adds a heap of lettuce, tomato and crema. Personally I find the con todo to be too much and overpower the delicious meats beneath it. Here’s what I had:
Al Pastor Taco I took this guy Mexican Style which was perfect to enjoy the spices and hint of sweetness from the pineapple.
Barbacoa Enchilada Taco I went Con Todo with this one and it ended up weighing about four pounds. I think I’ll stick to Mexican next time. The spicy goat itself was rich with a great blend of spices.
