East Village Seafood

Prima

Why Come Here? Great seafood and cocktails, casual atmosphere, friendly service

In my mind, Prima is the ultimate neighborhood spot. Cool without being too cool for school. Casual, friendly service. Dynamite cocktails from the team behind Summit Bar. Very good, simply prepared food. It works for almost any occasion, although it’s on the small side so you might want to take a large group elsewhere. Here’s what we had:

Cocktails: The cocktail list includes mostly strong drinks with heavy use of bitters. If a drink looks like it might be too sweet, don’t worry — it won’t be.

Food: The focus is on seafood (I think the only meat is a burger). It’s all simply prepared with your choice of 5 sauces.

Marinated Beets, Prima, East Village, NYC, Horesradish, Honeycrisp apple

Marinated Beets w/Honey Crisp Apple, Horseradish, Dijonnaise ** – I’ve never had beets prepared this way, but I’m definitely a fan. The shaved apple adds some sweetness while the horseradish adds a kick to a vegetable I’m not usually a huge fan of. I also found it to be quite refreshing.

Skate w/ green condiment (chimichurri) ** – The skate was nicely charred on the outside, but moist and tender within. The chimichurri addes some tanginess, but I could have used more of it.

Scallops w/ Vierge ** – Scallops were very fresh and cut like butter. The vierge sauce was underwhelming, but the scallops didn’t need much to be enjoyed.

Mille Feuille, Prima, East Village, NY, Dessert

Mille Feuille *** – A perfect end to the meal. It’s like a Napoleon with strawberries and cream. It looks cool, in addition to being refreshing and delicious.
