While many sites rate restaurants, dishes are almost never given the same treatment. How is one to know if something is merely good, great or destination worthy?
That’s why I came up with this rating system for dishes. Think of it more as a New York Times than a Yelp, with any number of stars being positive and 3-4 a rarity. My main criteria is how much I enjoyed the dish and would want to eat it again with originality and price factored in. That’s why a juicy $8 burger could get the same rating as an intricately prepared foie gras.
Suitable. A dish that is tasty enough to satisfy you’re craving for it. Think of it as solid side of vegetables or your typical deli sandwich.
Very Good. A normal dish at a good New York restaurant. You will enjoy it, but there’s nothing particularly special about it.
A good dish at a good restaurant. You are very pleased to be eating it.
Seriously Great. Generally a must order at a restaurant and something you’ll be thinking about the next few days.
A dish you won’t shut up about for the next few weeks. Original and nearly perfect.
Life Altering, absolute perfection. A dish worthy of flying to New York City for. You will never forget it.
