Why Come Here? Perfect renditions of classic doughnuts for a little over $1, 1950s vibe

In an age where $3 and $4 gourmet doughnuts rule the land, it’s sometimes nice to take turn back time to the good ole days when doughnuts were simply iced and filled with jelly or cream or just more dough.

No place transports you back better than the more than 60-year-old Peter Pan Bakery in Greenpoint where little appears to have changed since they first opened the doors in 1954. There’s an S-shaped metal diner counter – the kind you’ll immediately recognize from any movie about the 50s. The old regulars linger there, sipping their coffee while reading actual printed editions of the news. Behind it women standing dressed in old school green and pink uniforms (including hats!) will take your order.

Prices graciously also haven’t changes much. At $1.10 a pop, this is the best donut deal in town. The varieties are laid out Dunkin’ Donuts style in trays behind the counter and include a who’s who of the classics. There are your powdered jellies. The Bavarian Creams. The crullers and cakes. All the same price. All baked fresh. Personally, I’m partial to the jellies and cakes, but I can’t knock any of them. Below are a few that I’ve tried.

Note: Expect lines out the door on weekend mornings / early afternoons. And always be sure not to get there too late: the popular varieties go early!

Jelly Donut (3/4 stars) Moist, covered in granules of sugar and generously stuffed with jelly, it’s everything I ever wanted a jelly doughnut to be.

Powdered Sugar 2.5/4 stars These guys know how to use sugar. The simple brown powdered sugar isn’t the most exciting variety of donut, but you won’t find a better one.

Rred Velvet 2.5/4 stars  To be honest I’ve never been that into the red velvet craze. Yeah, it looks better than chocolate on your instagram feed but that’s about it. So maybe I’m a little negative on this one. The cake is great it’s one of their signatures. In the summer they use it to make an ice cream sandwich which I will certain be coming back for.

S’Mores Donut & Creme Filled Sprinkle Doughnut (2/4 stars) I’m putting these together because it all comes down to the creme. Personally, I find it a little too light and whipped. Otherwise these could be threes.
